Your Photo Session

What Time to Schedule your Session

Photo sessions for Individuals, Couples, Families, Models, Business PhotosIf we’re shooting indoors the time of day is not critical unless we are trying to capture window light. However, if we’re shooting outdoors at a park or another location we have lots of considerations. The golden hour of photography is the hour before sunset. Actually there is another golden opportunity and that’s during the first hour after sunrise. I can work with either, but most people would rather schedule a late evening photo session. Normally, we will want the natural light of the sun behind the camera or perhaps to one side. We don’t want the background to be distracting. I like natural backgrounds normally. ┬áIf we’re shooting in the evening I like to meet at least an hour and half before sunset. In the summer this will be late. In the winter months not so much, however in either case if we run late, we will literally run out of light. I prefer to have more time than not enough. If you have busy or impatient children, it is sometimes good to work on a tighter schedule so we don’t bore them with down time.

What Should You Wear for a Photo Session in the Park?

Ultimately the decision of what to wear is yours, but here are some suggestions.

  • Solid colors will photograph better than busy patterns.
  • In family or group photos, it’s good to match up. Dark pants and light shirts work well. I like denim and khaki pants with white or light blue shirts and blouses. Chambray shirts are great.
  • Long pants on the adults seem to make better family portraits, but of course you’re welcome to make that decision.
  • White flowing dresses photograph well in the breeze.
  • We’re in Texas, so be prepared for your hair to blow if we’re shooting outside.
  • If we’re shooting young children and you have a particular prop you would like to bring along that will be great.

What Should You Wear for a Home Session?

If we’re shooting at your home, or mine, what you wear will depend on your goal. If you’re wanting a head shot for business, then business attire is appropriate but remember solids or subdued patterns are best. Also remember that dark colors are slenderizing, if that is a concern.

If you’re doing a glamour, boudoir, maternity or fine art session, then evening wear or lingerie may be appropriate or you may want to use some of the props that we can provide like tulle, sheets or fabric drops, boas, or a simple man’s white shirt. We generally like to shoot two or three outfits or variations of outfits. My wife will discuss some of those options with you on the phone before your session.

When do I pay?

You may pay in two equal payments. The first payment is for your session package and is due at the time you book your photo shoot. The second payment is due when you have seen your proofs and make an order for prints.

How do I pay?

We accept cash, your personal check, and PayPal. If you want to pay using a credit card, you can pay using Mastercard, Visa, or American Express using PayPal. It’s quick and easy and there’s no fee to open an account.
